Terror Snakes by Either-Art Terror Snakes by Either-Art
Next up in the Drygrass plains is the Ekans evolutionary family, to which I added a new evolution for Arbok, Bazyldra.
#54-56

#54 - Ekans
#55 - Arbok

#56 - Bazyldra – Hydra Snake Pokemon
Poison – Dark
Evolves from Arbok after full corruption from Corrupted Essence (new Item) post level 50

________________________________________________
New Item: Corrupted Essence
Evolves certain species; Changes the bearer’s color over time; Boosts Attack and power of Dark and Poison type moves. At full corruption, the color change becomes permanent in Pokemon that don’t evolve from the use of the item.
________________________________________________

Note:

I know Ekans is Snake backwards and Arbok is a misspelling of Cobra backwards.

This one was never meant to be the backwards word of something else. My reasoning is that the corruption that it required to evolve corrupted it's naming scheme. The name is a cross between Basilisk (from Medieval European mythology) and Hydra (from Greek mythology).

Also Basilisk (Ksilisab) can't be easily pronounced backwards, and Hydra backwards (Ardyh) takes all the epic-ness out of the name.

Sometimes breaking naming conventions is necessary to retain the integrity of that which is being named. If there is a name backwards that both conveys the dark power of it, as well as fitting what it looks like, I will do it, but I have not been able to find anything fitting.

I wonder how many people are going to ask that question before they begin to realize it has already been answered.

Okay, I'm sorry to bring up the name, I know a lot of other posts talk about the name already but I think I have a different question unanswered in your note.  When I first saw the name, I pronounced it in my head as "buh•ZIL•druh".  However, if it is a corruption of "Hydra" (HAI•druh) and "Basilisk" (baz•IL•isk)  does that mean I should be pronouncing it "baz•AIL•druh" with the y pronounced how it is in the word hydra?

Where are you from? In the English language (Europe/U.S.), it's spelled with a C. The only places I found it spelled Kobra are in non-English speaking countries, like Turkey, Sweden, and Poland.

I live in America, and here its spelled Kobra
or at least that's how i spell it

but im pretty sure Pokemon was made somewhere in japan, where they don't speak English, so they possibly spell "Cobra" as "Kobra" so to you its a misspelling but maybe not to them

In America it's spelled Cobra. I was born and raised here, so I should know. Someone must've pulled a long con on you, or you're just trolling me, to which it would be my fault for not identifying it, but I've always been bad at identifying trolls since intonation is difficult to convey in text form.

why would i be trolling you? i mean, i really like snakes, maybe i just never heard anyone say Cobra and assumed because of the pokemon that it was spelled Kobra

If you type Kobra Snake into google, it will say "including results for Cobra Snake" (if you just type in Kobra, you get spray paint and the DC Comics character, and just Cobra will get you COBRA health insurance articles before the Cobra wikipedia page shows up). Even in hard copy dictionaries, it's spelled Cobra. You're the first person I've even conversed with that has insisted it's spelled with a K. Everyone learns something new every day, eh?

Humm, that's a tough one. There are no snake related terms left that don't look horrible spelled backwards.  ONly Idea I got would be to use the Hydra's full name, the "
"Lernaean Hydra" and call it the " Naeanrel," but that looks just as bad. Obviously this (awesome) guy is not a snake name spelled backwards, so what is his name origin?

I like Bazyldra but I've been racking my brain on a different name, found nothing snake-related backwards that worked, but then I thought of something. What's more difficult, and thus suggests more power, then turning a word backwards? Making an anagram!, so I thought of switching around some words, and finally came up with something, a mix of orochi (a mythical, 8-headed serpent *with an "o" removed*), and dark...Chiordrak!!! Feel free to tell me your opinion, and I suggest you all try some anagrams for this evolution yourselves.

Now that I think of it, I can make a better anagram than that, maybe Kradorochi?

I am truly surprised at the last evolution. Yes on so many levels.  I LOVE IT! Arbok was one of my favorites in pokemon. I miss that guy...
Also, I like the explanation you gave, you do what you want with your art. It is your work of art after all, so it doesn't mater what other people say.
Anyways, I say that Bazyldra sounds epic. Nice job! ;D

I really like Bazyldra and that name sounds awesome!!!! :))) Thank you for making an evolution of one of my favorite Pokemon!!! :)))

I understand the problem with Basilisk /Ksilisab and Hydra/Ardyh sounds really weird, but let me give it a whirl with naming if you allow me...

Background Info First: In Egyptian Mythology there was a god of Evil, Darkness, and Chaos named Apep, which is characterize as a snake or a dragon. (I know Apep backwards is Pepa, but Apep has another name (in Greek) called Apophis (ah-pof-hiss) and backwards it is Sihpopa (Seh-pope-ah <-Read really fast..)... I hope you like it!!! :) [I really like this one over the next suggestion...]

Here is also the wiki link: [link]

Another name suggestion is looking at transliteration of Hydra in Japanese, which is like Hidora and backwards it is Arodih and I pronounce it really different from google translate... I pronounce it like Ah-road-deh, and to my brain is sounds similar to erode...

Keep creating!!! (*Crossing fingers for more poison, dark, and ghos typest... :) [My favorite types])

why not give it a signature move? instead of a new item cause this sounds like a metronome for dark and poison. and the third color change would mean a third set of shiny sprites. it just sounds like a bit much
Reply
:iconeither-art:
Either-Art Featured By Owner Apr 2, 2013  Professional Digital Artist
I have absolutely no idea where the metronome comparison is coming from, but Bazyldra already has a couple signature moves. The item is tied to the hypothetical game plot besides this creature, and it's only one extra sprite for that item, and since the sprite would only be a color shift (in other Pokemon), it wouldn't take more than a couple minutes to make per creature once the initial sprites are available. And there's only one color change, so I don't understand where the three is coming from, either. You're creating information that isn't there, from what I can see.

I love it. I almost wish it was also a flying type considering that the two skin flaps almost look like wings, but it's still pretty epic. Anyway, my only critique would be that I think you should maybe rethink the item. Try looking at all of the pokemon items there are to give you a better sense of PK items. Maybe even consider just using a real item like toxic orb, or poison gem and dark gem.

The problem with using a pre-existing item, is that brings up the question of why we couldn't evolve them before. That's why some seemingly repeat items pop-up from time to time to aid in new evolutions of an old creature design. Plus, as stated in its description, it brings a unique twist to held items that shouldn't be added to a pre-existing item. Perhaps I could change or remove the stat effect, but the item is also tied to the hypothetical game plot, so that would have to be taken into account as well.
