The first gym leader encountered in the story. The player encounters him in the city immediately succeeding Canyon Cave.

General Gordon - "The Gruff American"

Back in the war days, General Gordon was Lt. Surge’s superior officer. Gordon’s straightforward tactics lead to many great victories in the last Great War. Even though the war ended long ago, he still brings his hardball strategy to the battlefield. He is not afraid to take a hit in order to make his team stronger, and trains against his Pokémon in order to increase their effectiveness on the field by being able to fight independently without their trainer if necessary.

Prior to first Battle:
“The Pokémon League stated that I was too harsh and brutal on up and coming trainers. To them I said that’s life, you have to play rough to win, but that wasn’t enough because they put me in charge as the introductory gym head. Just because I have a level cap, don’t expect me to make this easy for you.”

After player is victorious in first Battle:
“Bah, figures. Uh..good work for beating the easiest gym. Take the Granite Badge and this TM39 prize. It contains Rock Tomb. With the Granite badge, Pokemon up to level 20 will obey you, and you can use the HM move, Cut. If you actually manage to get to the Elite Four, I’ll be eagerly awaiting our rematch. Then I’ll be able to show you the true power of Rock-Pokémon!”
